Welcome to the George C. Pimentel website!

It’s 2010 and time to update this site!
Since its creation in 2003, very little has been added, but watch out for many new items of interest from now on. Your contributions are welcome too. More than twenty years after his death, George’s life is still being celebrated in events and stories.

This year—

The American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco will include a symposium marking the 50th anniversary of CHEM Study, the Pimentel Award address will be given by awardee Zafra Lerman, and an informal reception for George’s friends and associates will be hosted by Jeanne Pimentel and the UC College of Chemistry.

At UC Berkeley, the Pimentel Memorial Lecture has already been given by Michael George, and the winner of the George C. Pimentel Award for undergraduate research will be announced at Commencement in May.

Last year—

The Bancroft Library completed the processing of the George C. Pimentel Collection. His papers are finally available to the public. The Finding Aid is accessible through the Bancroft Library website.

The surviving members of the Mariner 6&7 IRS team had a forty-year reunion, celebrating with friends at the Space Sciences Lab where the instrument was built.

Always—

George's spirit and influence are still with us, in science and in the world at large. His research still affects today's discoveries in chemistry, and his students and colleagues remember him with affection and gratitude. Current students at UC Berkeley take classes in the lecture hall named for him.

On this site you will find information about the awards and events that honor him annually, a list of his students and research collaborators, summaries of his life, his UC Berkeley commencement address, the story of matrix isolation, and other examples of his rich legacy.

Many more items are planned—from his scientific bibliography to his (unpublished) short stories; from the CHEM Study story to the chemical laser; from National Chemistry Day to his advice to Congress, and his philosophy of science. And lots more photos.

I welcome your comments. Thanks for visiting.

Please note that the items on this site are primarily about George's professional life. I'll be glad to answer questions of a purely personal nature or pass on messages to family members if you will write me, Jeanne Pimentel, at jpim@berkeley.edu.
