Welcome

Welcome to the George C. Pimentel website. I created this site in 2003, with a little help from my friends, and high hopes for developing it further. So far I’ve only managed minor updates and additions, but still intend to enrich it exponentially. So do come back often and check its progress. Please note that the items on this site are primarily about George's professional life. I'll be glad to answer questions of a purely personal nature or pass on messages to family members if you will write me at jpim@berkeley.edu.

******

Nearly two decades after his death, George's spirit and influence are still with us, in chemistry and in the world at large, and I often receive queries about his work and his life. To learn more about him, or to remember him as an old friend or colleague, please browse these pages. I particularly welcome those who were his students and research collaborators at Berkeley, and urge you to keep in touch with me and with each other.

George’s research still affects today's discoveries in chemistry, and his students and colleagues remember him with affection and gratitude. There's a building named for him on the Berkeley campus, and several awards and events in his honor.

Also on this site are summaries of his life, his UC Berkeley commencement address, the status of his professional archive at UC Berkeley, and various accounts of his continuing influence. Many more items are planned - from his scientific bibliography to his (unpublished) short stories; from matrix isolation to Mars; from the CHEM Study story to the chemical laser; from National Chemistry Day to his advice to Congress and his philosophy of science. And more photos.

I welcome comments and contributions. Thanks for visiting.

*** LATEST NEWS ***

2009 is a very special year. We are celebrating three anniversaries in connection with George Pimentel, marking two, four, and five decades.

1989  George died on June 18 (Father’s Day).

1969  The Mariner VI & VII twin spacecraft, carrying an infrared spectrometer designed and built in George’s lab, flew by Mars and returned important data on the Martian surface and atmosphere.

1959  The CHEM Study project began: a revolutionary high school chemistry curriculum with George Pimentel as Editor-in-chief.

The College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley is planning an event in the Fall to mark the 20th anniversary of his passing.

Members of the original team of the Mariner VI/VII project are planning an informal reunion close to the August encounter dates. Friends and interested parties will be invited. (See Continuing Influence: Mars Research. )

CHEM Study will be the subject of a symposium at the American Chemical Society meeting in Spring 2010 in San Francisco: Division of Chemical Education, organized by Henry Heikkinen.

Information on all these events will be posted on this site as it becomes available. Meanwhile, contact Jeanne Pimentel at 510-843-3171, jpim@berkeley.edu for further details at any time.

*** OTHER RECENT DEVELOPMENTS ***

The Pimentel Papers. The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley is now actively working on processing the George C. Pimentel Papers, and hopes to have the collection available to the public by the end of the year. (See Pimentel archiving project.)
